Special arrangements during the COVID-19 pandemic

We are thinking of everyone affected by the coronavirus public health emergency and hope you all remain safe and well.

Latest update: All 2020 summer and autumn pre-sessional courses to be taught online.

All the University's pre-sessional courses taking place in 2020 will now be taught online as a result of the ongoing public health emergency. Students taking part in our specially designed distance learning programme will complete their studies and be assessed online. Due to the restrictions in place, students should not travel to Kingston upon Thames to take the courses. Visas are not required to enrol and we can accept a variety of English language tests with applications.

To complete the course, students will need:

  • a laptop or PC
  • a webcam and headphones
  • a stable internet connection: internet speeds with a minimum bandwidth of 600kbps (up/down), with a recommended speed of 1.5 Mbps (up/down)
  • a suitable place to study

Please see How to apply for more guidance on application times.

** Summer pre-sessional: We are now only accepting applications from students with main course offers from Kingston University. Our summer courses are now closed to students planning to study elsewhere.**

Why choose this course?

Kingston University's Pre-sessional English course will develop your English language and study skills to prepare you for your main course at university. Students who choose this course are ambitious and motivated. They come from a wide range of countries and go on to study on a wide range of degree programmes. Our teaching and administrative team are highly skilled and experienced in working with international students and we are committed to helping you successfully complete the course. Together this makes for a varied and stimulating academic experience.

Our courses will:

  • develop your English language skills so that you become more confident in your use of English and can participate fully on your chosen university programme;
  • develop the study skills you need at university;
  • develop your independence as a learner, which is an important skill for studying at British universities; and
  • introduce you to the University, Kingston and the surrounding area, helping you to settle in to your new environment and meet other students.

Student Arwa talks about the Pre-sessional English course in the following video:

Who are the courses for?

The courses are designed for international and European Union students who want to improve their English language skills and familiarise themselves with studying at university before starting studies at Kingston or another university.

This includes:

  • students who wish to prepare for university study and have met their English language requirement for their main course at Kingston University;
  • students who do not meet the English language entry requirements for their chosen university course;
  • students joining Kingston University as part of an exchange programme (eg Erasmus or Study Abroad); and
  • students planning to study at another British university (**no remaining places on Summer pre-sessional 2020).
